Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th April 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother. She grew up being an all-single child. Scott was a student at The Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she entered Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school as well as working two other jobs. Her dream was to be an English secondary school teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. She began her career by singing live poetry and performing her own work. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. She was first outed in the midst of a Roots Show. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the performing arts during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign to Hidden Beach Recordings.
